What We Build
“Custom software” covers a wide range of systems. In practice, most of the work our clients bring us falls into six recognizable categories. Each one below links to a project we delivered, so you can see the shape of the work rather than take our word for it.
Customer-facing platforms
The product your customers log into — account management, self-service, transactions, onboarding. These systems carry your brand and absorb your support load, so reliability and usability matter as much as features. We provided full-stack development for Axos Bank’s online banking application, unifying web and mobile to scale across multiple brands over a seven-year engagement.
Internal operations tools
The systems your own teams run the business on, and the most common reason companies outsource custom development at all: the process already works, but it lives in spreadsheets that no longer scale. For JPMorganChase we replaced spreadsheet-based budgeting with enterprise-grade platforms in eight months.
Data and reporting systems
Pipelines, aggregation layers, dashboards and the reporting surfaces built on top of them. The engineering difficulty is usually not the chart — it is getting trustworthy data out of systems that were never designed to share it. For Humana we built a 45-screen iPad application in 18 weeks that aggregated readings from connected Bluetooth health devices.
Integrations and APIs
Connecting the systems you already own to each other, and to payment processors, identity providers and partner platforms. Integration work is where hidden complexity lives, and where scope estimates most often go wrong. For Young Living we modernized APIs and cloud infrastructure to support B2B and B2C growth across three years of delivery.
Mobile applications
Native and cross-platform apps, whether consumer-facing or built for a field workforce that needs to work offline. For Blue Owl we turned spreadsheet workflows into a mobile data engine spanning 28 views, delivered in 18 weeks.
Legacy modernization
Replacing or re-platforming a system that still runs the business but can no longer be changed safely. This is rarely a rewrite from zero; it is incremental replacement while the old system keeps running. For First Data we migrated a legacy COBOL payments system to a modern Java backend in 24 weeks, replacing green-screen workflows with 66 redesigned screens.

What Drives the Cost of Custom Software
Custom software is priced by effort, and effort is driven by a handful of variables. No vendor can quote you a number from a page like this one — but you can walk into the conversation knowing which levers move the estimate, and which of them you control.
- Scope and size. The blunt measure is how much software there is: how many screens, how many workflows, how many user roles. A focused tool with twenty screens is a different project from a platform with several hundred. Scope is the one variable you can always cut, and the first place to look if an estimate comes back higher than expected.
- Complexity. Two applications with the same number of screens can differ enormously underneath. Heavy calculation, real-time processing and intricate business rules demand more senior engineers and more time — both of which raise cost.
- Integrations. Standalone software is almost always cheaper to build than software that has to talk to other systems. Every connection to an internal platform, a payment processor or an identity provider adds engineering, testing and failure handling. This is the most commonly underestimated driver on the list.
- Compliance requirements. Building for regulated sectors means working inside frameworks like HIPAA, PCI-DSS, SOC 2 or GxP. The controls, documentation and validation those frameworks require are real engineering work, and they need to be priced in from the start rather than discovered late.
- Team size and seniority. The composition of the team — how many engineers, at what level, plus QA, design and architecture — sets the monthly run rate. A larger team can compress a timeline, but not indefinitely, and adding people to a late project rarely recovers the schedule.
- Timeline. Aggressive dates are bought with more people working in parallel, which costs more per unit of output. A realistic schedule is usually the cheaper one.
- Design depth. A purely functional interface costs less than a designed product experience. For customer-facing software, design is typically the difference between something that ships and something that gets adopted.
We scope a plan around your specific requirements so you know what to expect before you commit. For a fixed-scope project, that means a documented specification and a fixed fee agreed before the build starts.
How to Choose a Custom Software Development Company
Most vendors present similarly: the same stack logos, the same claims about senior talent. The differences that actually predict how a project goes only surface if you ask directly. Use the checklist below in your evaluation calls — and if you are earlier in the process, our guide to what a software development company does covers the ground before this one.
1. Ask how they scope the work
Find out what you receive before the build begins. A vendor should be able to describe a discovery phase that produces something concrete — a written scope with measurable acceptance criteria, an architecture, a plan you could hand to a different team. If scoping is treated as unpaid pre-sales work, the estimate behind it is a guess.
2. Ask who is actually on your team, and whether they stay
Continuity matters more than headline talent. Ask who will be assigned, whether those people are dedicated to your project or shared, what happens when someone rolls off, and what the vendor’s attrition looks like. Ask whether they will replace an engineer who is not the right fit, and at whose cost.
3. Ask how testing is handled
“We test” is not an answer. Ask what is automated versus manual, whether tests run in a continuous integration pipeline on every change, who writes them, and whether QA is a separate discipline on the team or something developers fit in around feature work. Ask to see how a defect found in production gets traced and fixed.
4. Ask what the security and compliance posture is
Ask for specifics: which certifications the company actually holds, how your data and source code are handled, whether work happens on managed devices, and what experience they have with the particular regime you operate under. A vendor that has passed an audit will answer precisely; one that has not will answer in adjectives.
5. Ask who owns the code
Confirm in writing that you own the source code and all intellectual property produced, that rights transfer to you, and that you receive the code and operating documentation at handover. Ask which law governs the contract. A completed project should leave you able to run, maintain and extend the system without depending on the vendor who built it.
6. Ask how change is priced
Requirements move on every project. What separates a controlled engagement from an overrun is whether changes follow a written path — a documented request, a priced cost and schedule impact, and an approval before anyone starts building. Ask to see what a change order looks like.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you ensure code quality?
We utilize a multi-layered approach involving automated unit testing, manual QA, peer code reviews, and continuous integration pipelines. Our Centers of Excellence provide governance and best practices across all projects.
Who owns the code and the intellectual property?
You do. unosquare is a US-based company, our contracts are governed by US law, and we assign all intellectual property rights to you. On completed projects your team receives source code access along with step-by-step operating documentation, so code, data and roadmap rights sit with you rather than with the vendor who wrote them.
Do you work on fixed scope, or as an ongoing team?
Both, and the right answer depends on how well defined the work is. For a well-specified project we offer fixed-scope, fixed-price delivery: requirements, tech stack and acceptance criteria are documented upfront, the team estimates the effort with a buffer for unknowns, and you get a single fee with the total cost known before work begins. If we underestimate, we absorb it. For ongoing product development where priorities shift sprint to sprint, a dedicated team or staff augmentation model fits better — you pay a transparent monthly rate per engineer and scale the team up or down as needs change. See our outcome-based delivery and capacity options.
How is testing handled?
Testing is part of the engineering work, not a phase bolted on at the end. Our teams build automated test coverage that runs in your continuous integration pipeline on every change, using frameworks such as Selenium, Cypress, Playwright and Appium, with JMeter and similar tools for performance work. Manual exploratory testing stays in the mix for usability and complex edge cases that automation handles poorly. Dedicated QA engineers and SDETs can sit on the team rather than the work being squeezed in around feature delivery. See our QA and testing services for detail.
How do you handle change requests?
Through a written change control process rather than a hallway conversation. A proposed change is documented as a request, its cost and schedule impact are priced, and authorized approval is required before any work begins. A change log records what changed, when, who approved it and what it cost, so every invoice traces back to a decision you made. On fixed-price engagements, scope changes are handled as explicit change orders priced separately from the original fee. We have written up how we approach this in controlling scope creep.
What happens after launch?
Post-launch we provide maintenance and optimization to keep the software performing as your business evolves. A completed project includes a defined post-launch support window and clear handover responsibilities, so your team can run and extend the system independently. Where you would rather not carry that load internally, our managed services team can take on ongoing operations support.
How quickly can a project start?
We can typically present qualified candidates for review within 5-10 business days. For full dedicated teams, the ramp-up period is usually 2-4 weeks depending on the specific technology stack required. For fixed-scope project work, discovery starts sooner — the scoping phase produces the specification and architecture that the build estimate depends on, so that work can begin while the wider team is being assembled.
How do you handle communication and project management?
We integrate directly into your existing communication channels (Slack, Teams, Jira). Being in US time zones allows our engineers to attend your stand-ups and planning meetings in real-time.
How do you ensure security and compliance?
unosquare is SOC2 Type 2 certified. We adhere to strict security protocols, including secure development lifecycles and regular vulnerability assessments, especially for clients in regulated industries like Fintech and Healthcare.
