Cloud Migration for Educational Publishing
10 Years and Counting. Modernizing Harvard Business Publishing’s Learning Ecosystem Through Cloud, Data, and AI.
Results
Migrated all Harvard Business Publishing (HBP) applications from legacy systems to AWS-based microservices.
Unified infrastructure across Higher Education, Corporate Learning, and HBR for global scalability and consistency.
Launched HBR Spark, an AI-driven MVP powered by data intelligence and modern cloud architecture.
Highlights / Intro
For over a decade, unosquare has helped Harvard Business Publishing redefine how learning is built, delivered, and scaled.
From higher education to executive training, our collaboration has modernized every layer of their ecosystem; integrating AI, cloud, and data-driven decisioning to support a new generation of personalized educational experiences.
Challenge
HBP’s fragmented systems limited scalability and slowed innovation across diverse business units.
Each platform carried its own infrastructure, workflows, and data silos; making it increasingly costly to maintain and difficult to evolve.
They needed a unified, cloud-based architecture that could consolidate systems, streamline data flows, and enable faster innovation across both enterprise learning tools and experimental AI-driven initiatives.
Solution
unosquare deployed a 65-person nearshore team embedded across all three HBP business units, Higher Education, Corporate Learning, and HBR as well as shared functions like Cloud Ops and Content Systems.
Team
22 Java Engineers · 24 React Engineers · 11 QA Engineers · 3 AWS/Cloud Engineers · 1 AI Engineer · 1 Site Reliability Specialist · 1 Scrum Master · 2 PHP/DB Engineers
Tech Stack
Java, Spring, Hibernate, MySQL, LTI, React, TypeScript, Webpack, PHP, Jenkins, AWS, Docker
Together, we transitioned HBP’s entire digital portfolio into AWS micro-frontends and REST microservices, improving performance and scalability.
We also established clean data pipelines and a connected analytics layer; enabling visibility across learning platforms and fueling AI-assisted personalization for HBR Spark and future initiatives.
unosquare’s Centers of Excellence ensured that transformation wasn’t just technical, but intelligent and measurable:
Cloud & Infrastructure COE → architected AWS environments and CI/CD frameworks to ensure high availability and cost efficiency.
AI COE → accelerated the development of HBR Spark’s recommendation engine and adaptive learning capabilities.
Data COE → stablished unified data architecture and governance, improving reporting, analytics, and decision-making across teams.
Software Engineering COE → standardized frameworks, ensuring reliability and speed in every release.
Product Engineering COE (Business Strategy + Design) → aligned modernization with HBP’s long-term educational mission and learner experience vision.
When knowledge meets the cloud, data becomes the foundation for innovation.
