The Nearshore business model emerged after outsourcing and offshoring took flight between the US and India during the 1970’s. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was ratified in 1994, thereby opening the door to free trade between the US, Mexico, and Canada. That one treaty effectively created the world’s largest trading block, a necessary step to compete with the soon to be established European Union. Once work visas and travel considerations were made easier through NAFTA, the Nearshoring concept took off and grew considerably within larger US companies. As the value of Nearshoring is being realized and publicized, the business model is gaining ground with smaller and mid-sized companies.
